This fun and, yes, ok, maybe a little bit weird dessert was inspired by one of our favorite holiday movies: ELF! Specifically, the spaghetti scene where Buddy the Elf tops his spaghetti with maple syrup, chocolate syrup, M&Ms, marshmallows and a chocolate Pop Tart. INSPIRED! No, really. We were inspired.
About the recipe
We tried a few different versions and the one we landed on uses chow mein noodles like you’d find in a haystack cookie (another fun and easy no bake dessert!) We tested real maple syrup but it was a bit too sticky! Maple flavoring gave the right flavor without creating a mess.
Buddy the Elf uses Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup on his spaghetti, and we gave a nod to that with melted chocolate chips. It dries pretty quick, so it’s not quite as messy as Hershey’s. We used mini marshmallows, but Jet-Puffed Mallow Bits would also be really cute here. Same with M&Ms– we used regular ones but mini ones would work too.
We took these to a cookie swap (…and our chocolate chip cookies …and homemade peppermint marshmallows …and it was probably too much and we will never be invited back) and they were a hit! How could they not be? Perfectly on theme and absolutely adorable.
This recipe for Elf Spaghetti Cookies is so easy and very kid-friendly! The only real cooking step (and I’m not even sure it counts as cooking…) is to melt white chocolate in the microwave. Other than that, it’s just mixing a few things, portioning the cookies out and topping them with an elf’s favorite food!
When making this Elf spaghetti inspired dessert I was reminded of the scene in Gilmore Girls where Sookie tries to make a cutesy knitting-themed dessert out of spaghetti and breadsticks. Anyone else? Bueller?
Elf Spaghetti Cookie Recipe
- 10 oz white chocolate chips or melting wafers (we use these!)
- 8 oz chow mein noodles (I used a little less than the 11 ounce bag just to make sure they were fully coated)
- 1 t maple flavor
- Mini marshmallows
- Chocolate Pop Tarts
- Chocolate chips or chocolate melting wafers
- Melt white chocolate by microwaving it in a glass bowl or other microwave-friendly dish. Stir after 15-30 seconds and if not yet melted, microwave for another 15-30 seconds. Repeat until all chocolate has melted. NOTE: If the chocolate feels hot but it’s still acting a bit weird, it may be too hot!! Let it cool off on your counter to see if it gets to a better consistency after a few minutes.
- Stir in maple flavor until a consistent color is reached. This can sometimes cool the chocolate a bit. If it becomes hard stir, pop it in the microwave for about 10 seconds.
- Stir in chow mein noodles until fully coated. If it seems a bit stiff or hard to stir at this point, you may need to microwave it for a few more seconds to make it easier to handle.
- Portion out into 9 cookies. Flatten the cookie stacks a bit when doing this to create a larger surface for toppings. If they are too round your toppings will fall off. Trust me! 🙂
- Add toppings! Top with mini marshmallows, M&Ms, Pop Tarts and melted chocolate.
